Grandma's Bran Muffins

2 cups boiling water
5 tsp baking soda
1 qt. buttermilk
add 2 cups All Bran (flake cereal)

Cream together:
1 cup shortening or 3/4 cup veg oil and 1/4 c applesauce
2 cups sugar
Add eggs then liquid
4 eggs (one at a time)

Gradually add following ingredients
4 cups bran buds cereal
5 or 6  cups flour (1 cup white and 4 cups whole wheat)
1 tsp salt
opt.  add nuts, fruit

Bake at 425 for 15 minutes.
Batter will keep for 6 weeks in the refrigerator.
